So you've decided to clean up your mailbox and either sort incoming messages automatically or just clear up some of the incoming junk...Great.  


For incoming spam messages you can try to decide if they are malicious or innocuous. For example if it's just an daily/weekly Ad from a company you don't want to see, perhaps you can just block it on your account. However if it was a message impersonating someone else, trying to ask you to click on a link, ask for money, (or when you're just not sure). Then forward it to Antispam@brandonu.ca


There are a few different options for managing spam and junk mail. First of all you should know there are three main levels of possible mail filtering. These are also the locations (in order) that you should look for messages which you think you haven't been receiving.

  1. Your mailbox junk mail folder, safe/blocked senders, & mailbox rules.
  2. The Office 365 Quarantine 
  3. The IT Services Antispam @brandonu.ca

You have full control over the first option; access and partial control over your 365 Quarantine; and you can provide input towards the IT Antispam lists.


Your mailbox junk-Email folder is controlled by the settings you pick within your account.  You can set it to:

  • no filtering (recommended)
  • low filtering (recommended)
  • high filtering
  • safe-sender only. (not recommended)

To open "Junk Mail options" first click "home" and then the icon shown below:



Note: when using MacOS Mail App, you'll need to enable the junk mail filtering in order to see the junk mail folder on the computer.  Which is another reason we recommend using the Outlook App instead.


To start adding people to your blocked sender list, simply right-click on a message of theirs and choose "Junk" > "Block Sender"


Remember to keep an eye on your junk mail folder every so often to make sure that good messages aren't going into that folder as well. If they are, you may need to reduce your level of filtering or add them to your "safe sender" list.
