This BU support article is for eligible students in the following Brandon University Residence Buildings:

  • McMaster Hall
  • Flora Cowen
  • Darrach Hall

There are two Wi-Fi networks operating throughout the buildings:

1)  BU_ResGuests  - this Wi-Fi network is 'open', anyone is free to connect. When you connect, you must accept the agreement page first. If you do not see the agreement page, simply open an internet browser on your device (Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari) and when you try to access a website, you should receive the prompt.  Connections to BU_ResGuests will time out after 90 minutes.

2) BU_Residence - this Wi-Fi network only to access to eligible individuals staying in BU Residence. You will be provided with an access key from BU Ancillary services.

Basic connection process:

  1. On the wireless device you are trying to connect, find the name of BU_Residence and select it
  2. Enter your Wi-Fi access key listed when prompted
  3. That's it!

Advanced Settings - If you are unable to add your device automatically to the BU_Residence Wi-Fi, you may try to input the settings manually on your device. Please consult with the instructions for your device on how to do so.

  • Wi-Fi name (aka SSID):  BU_Residence
  • Authentication Mode:  'WPA2-PSK' or 'WPA2-Personal'
  • Encryption: either 'AES' or 'AES-CCMP'

Remember to keep your BU access key private! It is your own personal key to access the network, you can use it to connect all your devices to the same network. Never share it with anyone else, and BU departments will never solicit you for your own key.

Troubleshooting

- Please contact BU Ancillary Services first to in situations where you have not received a private access key to BU_Residence Wi-Fi system.

- Try performing a "full power restart" on your device. Pressing the power on some laptops and mobile devices will only put your device to sleep. Consult your device's documentations for details.

- If your BU Wi-Fi access key does not work on one device, try it on another you may own. If the key works on one device but not another, there may be an issue with that specific device.

- If you are only unable to access a certain website or online system, but other websites and online services are working ok, there may just be a problem accessing the specific system you are trying to reach.

All of the information above is relevant for only within the BU Residence buildings. For the rest of campus Wi-Fi coverage, you will need to have your devices registered to the BU_Wireless network (not the same as BU_Residence). Several articles for BU_Wireless are here:
