BU Staff - Password Reset Instructions

For BU Staff, these are the steps you may use to reset your password when you have forgotten it, isn’t working, or need to change your password.

Setting up your BU Staff Password Reset profile


To use the reset portal website, you need to perform a one-time process of setting up your BU password reset profile.  This is very important for new BU Staff Accounts.


If you have already completed these steps previously, you may proceed to the section that states "Using the Reset Portal", found further in this guide.



First open an internet browser and visit:  https://staffpasswordreset.brandonu.ca then choose “Go To Setup Tool”

 

  •  Enter your BU username and click Continue
  • You will be prompted to authenticate using your BU Username and Password, and press Continue 
    • Make sure enter your current BU Username and Password
  • Once you have authenticated to the system, it will ask you to create three (3) Challenge Questions of your choice and provide the answers 
    • You can select any of the questions available, or you can type your own
    • Each answer you provide for your selected questions must be at least 3 characters long
  • After you have entered your Challenge Questions click Continue
  • OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED: You will be prompted to enter an Alternate E-Mail address
    • Enter a non BrandonU.ca email address as your alternate E-Mail address and click Continue.  If you do not have an alternate email address, click Skip
  • OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED: You will be prompted for your mobile phone number
    • Enter your mobile phone number and the Cell Carrier.  If you do not have a mobile phone, click Skip

Once that is complete you have successfully created your Password Reset Portal profile


Using the BU Staff Password Reset Portal

You may only perform these steps once you have completed the initial setup for your BU Account.  

Visit:  https://staffpasswordreset.brandonu.ca and choose "Go To Change Tool” as in the image below. 



Enter your BU Account username, then select one of the options presented to you to 'Confirm' your BU account (see the image and list of options below)




  1. Authenticate with BU Username and Password 
    • You may select this option if you still know your current BU Password
    • Enter your credentials (BU Username and Password) that you use to sign into BU Websites or systems Services
  2. Authenticate with Challenge Questions 
    • You may select this option, and will be prompted for 1 of your 3 challenge questions you set up previously.  
    • Type in your answer, and press next (it does not care about upper-case and lower case in your answer)
  3. Authenticate with SMS (sends a text to your phone)  **Only if you provided a phone number during your reset profile setup
    • Click Send Pin
    • Wait for your text message to arrive (may take up to 2 minutes) 
    • Enter the code you receive into the proper field
  4. Authenticate with E-Mail (sends an email code to the selected email address)   **Only if you provided an email during your reset profile setup 
    • Click Send Pin
    • Wait for your email message to arrive (may take up to 2 minutes)
    • Enter the code you received into the proper field

Once you have confirmed your identity, you are presented with the option to enter your new password for your BU Account. Your new password must follow all of the password complexity requirements that are listed under “BU Password Rules”.

After entering a new password that satisfies the Password Rules, you can click “Reset”. The system will then process the password reset request.  Only by receiving a 'Password Reset successful' notice will your password actually have changed. 

  • If you get a failure during any part of the reset process, please double check the list of password rules above, or contact the Brandon University Help Desk.


Updating your Portal Profile

You are able to use the Password Reset Portal to update your profile. Select “Go to Update Tool” and authenticate using the same process listed above. Once you are authenticated you are able to update the following options:

  • Challenge Questions
  • Alternate E-Mail
  • Mobile Phone Number


Desktop Application (BU Computers Only)

There is an application available for your Windows Computer that will allow you to Reset or Change your password without having to log into your computer. This very helpful if you have forgotten your password and you are unable to sign into your computer. The application simply adds a “Forgot Your Password” option on the login screen, which you can click, if you have forgotten your password (shown in image below). Contact the Brandon University Help Desk to have this application installed on your Windows Computer.
